The Legacy Of A War Criminal - Editorial

Few, if any, western politicians have been punished more harshly by their electorate than was Australia’s Prime Minister, John Howard in November 2007.

The media, as remote and speculative as ever, portrayed this as the price Howard paid for imposing oppressive industrial relations legislation, and for being a global warming sceptic. The reality is, anthropogenic global warming, real or fabricated, was the last thing on the electorate’s mind. Just what dark intensity seethed and writhed within the collective consciousness looms into closer tangibility when we glance at the actual reprisals exacted by the Electorate.

Not only did Howard’s Government lose the elections in an appalling landslide; his party made it clear he had also lost its leadership even before voting began. But long before the grim polling booth queues shortened it was apparent that John Howard’s own electorate had spat him out like a piece decaying and maggot-infested meat. But even this did not satiate voter hatred. Inflicting unprecedented pain, he lost; not only to a woman in an environment of almost overt misogynism, but to a newcomer to party politics, and an ex-journalist at that. Short of actually beating Howard to death, voter fury could not have been more brutal. The mutilated bodies of Howard’s executive soldiers also littered the election field.

Now, to attribute such anger to the theory of anthropogenic global warming is clearly preposterous, and exposes just how moribund and vacuous is Australia’s mainstream journalism.

Howard’s anti-worker WorkChoices legislation had created widespread angst, and inspired well-justified fear in all (non-mining industry) workers; by turning hard-won conditions back a full century. And, most certainly, this alone was enough to cost Howard’s Liberal-National Coalition the elections.

But there was also the behaviour of variously Industrial Relations and Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews and his orgasmic savouring of slave-worker grovelling, which created quite sufficient disgust to ensure mere defeat became a thorough trouncing in the polling booth. Moreover, Kevin Andrew’s illegal abduction and interrogation of innocent and highly regarded Pakistani, Doctor Haneef, no doubted inspired a few extra kicks in the political gonads. But the ferocious violence of Howard’s defeat was clearly provoked by something more viscerally painful.

The real cause was revealed in an earlier 2006 interactive questionnaire survey of a previously proved Sunshine Coast demographic corridor. This is a region highly populated by Australians recently migrated from southern states; therefore unusually representative, and is purportedly prosperous as the nation’s premier tourism and housing boom region. Thus, any estimates of poverty could be regarded as erring towards conservatism.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Nevertheless, it was found that unemployment, far from being the 3.2% claimed by John Howard, was actually 19%. Moreover, it was established that 54% of Australians were dying in slow motion from malnutrition and lack of medical and dental care; struggling to survive on incomes below $15,000 per year. And as for Howard’s much-vaunted Era of Prosperity, more than 67% of Australians received less than $29,000 per year.

What astounded the surveyors was that approximately 96% of survey participants were quietly aware of the real levels of unemployment and poverty. Many volunteered stories of the horrific suffering of victims; and of the suicides of breadwinners who could no longer face the anguish of failing their families while ‘everyone else enjoyed Howard’s prosperity’. Everybody knew someone who had witnessed the agony.

It is not difficult to imagine how Aussies responded to Howard and his sneering cronies, as they strutted on family TVs and so cynically disregarded the misery and degradation they had created. It is not hard to emphasise with their feelings as Aussie viewers silently bit their lips and swore the worst possible vengeance, come the Federal Elections.

As Australia’s all-time most astute political analyst, Dennis Horne put it in his iconic 1964 book The Lucky Country… no Australian political party has ever been voted into office. The incumbent was punished by being voted out.

Nothing has changed.

Kevin Rudd fancies himself as the Messiah but he is delusional, and already as megalomaniacal as John Howard. Half the nation has known from the outset that he is a Howard clone; and that the ALP Government will continue Howard’s programme of national destruction as seamlessly as Howard himself installed this same legacy of Paul Keating. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Thus it has been that the Chalice once passed to Bob Hawke by the global bankers, later snatched by Paul Keating and passed on to Howard, is now embraced even more closely by Kevin Rudd.

 

 

 

 

 

 

In all fairness, it must be admitted that Rudd came better prepared. He alone ensured that when he completes the handover of Australian sovereignty and independence to Imperial China, he will embellish the flourish in Mandarin. No doubt, the media support and bank finance that shoehorned him into ALP leadership also included the promise of Presidency of China’s newest colony.

However, statistically speaking, messiahs have a poor survival record and an angry multitude out there knows that erasing the word treason from the statute books will not be enough to stall judgement day.
