Ali Amrozi, an illiterate mechanic, confessed to preparing the fertilizer chemicals delivered in the Mitsubishi van. Investigators claimed they tracked Amrozi by reconstructing fragments of the van, obtaining the Vehicle Identification Number stamped on the van’s axle.

The best comparative example of a car bombing in a populated area was the 1998 Omagh car bombing. The Omagh explosive was a 225kg Ammonium nitrate and fuel oil bomb. Ammonium nitrate and fuel oil also known as ANFO has twice the maximum force of potassium chlorate. The 225kg ANFO car bomb caused serious damage to adjacent buildings. However, only caused minor damage to buildings and vehicles in a 50 metre radius. 29 people were killed; the majority of deaths were caused by shrapnel. All of the bodies were visibly identifiable. 220 people were injured in the blast giving a 12% rate of fatality. No crater remained.
